Taste of Memory - Fortune Group

With the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund the Fortune group 2010-2011 project will explore the stories, customs and the preparation of the food eaten by the many new groups of people who now live in our community.

On the basis that "we are what we eat" and that Britain's eating habits are constantly influenced by foods which arrive with waves of migration, (fish and chips, sweet and sour, spaghetti, curry etc etc) this will be a project on the Heritage of Food.  We call it Taste of Memory and the young refugees of the Fortune group will be out and about interviewing members of their communities, gathering information about foods which have come with them, investigating how those foods are re-created in the UK, who imports the food, or what can be grown here.

Together with their own memories and realities of food this information will be worked into a performance, an exhibition, a book and a website.  We are offering you a taster of the project with the participants' research videos below. When the final performance is  ready please come and taste our food and hear our stories.  Watch this Space!

And if you are from a community which has brought new foods into the UK, please contact us and share your memories, recipes and stories.
